At St. Hilda’s, British Values underpin everything we do.

We promote the fundamental British values of democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Our PSHE scheme, Jigsaw, contributes to the British Values agenda very significantly, both through the direct teaching of information and through the experiential learning children will enjoy.

The 5 strands of the British Values agenda have been mapped across every Puzzle and every Piece (lesson). 

The programme of study helps our children to:

•  foster an understanding of Identity, Diversity, Community and Equality
•  develop Spiritually, Morally, Socially and Culturally  
•  live in a changing and complex global world
•  understand the importance of values and how to share these in their own lives and with others 

Other examples of British Values in action within our school are developed by:

Democracy: we have a strong school parliament which is elected annually by our children. The children take great pride in their roles as Ambassadors promoting our school values of Trust, Knowledge, Respect, Community, Aspirations and Knowledge.  

Individual liberty: our pupil’s gain awareness of their choice and freedoms in school and in their own life now and in the future.

Rule of law: we make links to the importance of school rules and values and that the law applies to everyone. We invite visitors into school, for example the police, to develop children’s understanding and experiences further. We have children chosen as Playtime Buddies who help children to follow rules in the playground, create a community spirit and foster mutual respect.

Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs (and those without faith): We continually build on existing good practice in collective worship, assemblies, RE topics, other links to curriculum topics, PSHE circle time, relationships and extra- curricular clubs and trips.
