- design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including~controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them~into smaller parts

Intent
Our intent at St Hilda’s is to provide our children with rich, deep learning experiences that balance all the aspects of computing. With technology playing such a significant role in society today, we want to model and educate our pupils on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely. We want our pupils to be innovators not consumers, and our broad curriculum encompassing computer science, information technology and digital literacy reflects this. We understand ‘Computational thinking’ is a skill children must be taught if they are to participate effectively and safely in the digital world. We believe a high-quality computing education equips pupils with the tools to understand and change the world. As computing has deep links with maths, science and DT, we encourage staff to try to embed computing across the whole curriculum to make learning creative, accessible and enjoyable. At St Hilda’s, the core of computing is Computer Science. Our pupils are introduced to a wide range of technology, including laptops, iPads and computers. This allows them to continually practice and improve the skills they learn, ensuring they become digitally literate so they can express themselves and develop their ideas safely through information and computer technology– at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

- To be aware that all activities leave a digital footprint and how they impact their future lives.
- To manipulate any device effectively typing, stylus, touch-screen etc.
- To know and use technology so that it is fit for purpose.
- To keep themselves and personal information safe and to be confident what to do when they don't feel safe.
- To record and present work appropriately using technology.
- To use computing including coding to solve problems.
- To be able to use technology to find out information and critically analyse if it is trustworthy.

Implementation
Following a scheme with objectives in line with the National Curriculum, children will access high quality teaching during computing lessons weekly and will be exposed to lessons that both promote and progress their fundamental skills, which can be applied across the school curriculum. Learners will have access to the appropriate hardware and software to develop knowledge and skills of digital systems and their applications. Teaching and learning should facilitate progression across all key stages within the strands of digital literacy, information technology and computer science. Teachers support learning by ensuring the delivery of the subject is accessible to learners of all abilities by making carefully planned adaptations and opportunities for talk. As well as opportunities underpinned in the scheme of work, children will have opportunities to develop their skills as a secondary objective when using technology in foundation subjects and home learning, thus ensuring metacognition strategies are addressed in school and at home.
Impact
Children will value the curriculum we deliver and approach lessons enthusiastically as they will enjoy the opportunity to work with technology. Pupils will become competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology. Learners’ progress in Computing and the success of the curriculum itself will be assessed via the analysis of progress data, pupil voice, observations and staff audits. This analysis will then inform future adaptations to the scheme.
To demonstrate that we have accomplished our aims, learners at St Hilda’s will be able to
- Evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies.
- Analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs to solve such problems.
- Understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
All the above points will support children in their transition to secondary school and aid them in their preparation for life in the modern world.
