The Christmas Tree Festival Club - December 2024

The Christmas Tree Festival Club has been very busy over the last few weeks. The children have created gingerbread decorations to display on the St Hilda's Christmas tree at Parish Church in Oldham. The children enjoyed a trip to the church to see their decorations on display. We were all very proud of how amazing it looked!

Year 6: Viking Longboats - March 2024

Y6 are studying the design and construction of Viking Longboats. Our initial learning has been focussed on the scale of these fearsome ships and what it would have been like to sail on one. In our first lesson we measured out the accurate size of a Viking Longboat and discussed how we can make our scale models. 

Year 4: Golden Time UFOs - May 2024

The children using their creativity in ‘Golden Time’ to build UFOs!

Year 2: Pizza Topic - May 2024

Owls Class have really enjoyed learning about where pizzas originated from and the importance of a balanced diet.  Children had the opportunity to collect data about children's favourite pizza toppings using a tally chart.  We loved cooking and eating our pizza! 

Year 4: Muffins! - June 2024

Cherry class tasted different flavours of muffins as part of their new DT topic! They picked out the different ingredients and flavours they could smell and taste, as well as commenting on the texture. It was a piece of cake!

Year 5: Let there be Light! - November 2024

In DT, Oak and Pine class have been working with Crumble, they assembled the crumbled and created a light. It was a deLIGHTful lesson! 

Year 4: Health Salads - February 2025

The children enjoyed making their healthy salads in DT! They used the ‘claw’ and ‘bridge’ technique to carefully cut the ingredients!

Year 5: Cams and Pulleys - April 2025

Oak class and Pine class worked together to design a cam toy with two motions of movement and a cam. They worked wonderfully together and created masterpieces. We are very proud!

Year 2: Weaving - May 2025

We hae been making our own baskets using a weaving technique.

Year 1 & 2: Gruffalo Shadow Puppets - October 2025

Year 1/2 have been busy in DT creating split pin characters from the story of the Gruffalo. We aim to create a moving shadow puppet of the Gruffalo.

Year 3: Stone Age Houses - October 2025

Year 3 have been very busy this term! In Design and Technology, we designed and built our own Stone Age houses, using natural materials similar to those used by people of the time to create their settlements. The children showed great creativity and teamwork in bringing their ideas to life.

Year 4: Bridges - November 2025

Birch Class have been learning about the different types of bridges. They experimented with wooden blocks, straws and sticks to create bridges in pairs. 

Year 4: Using a Compass for Bridge Design - December 2025

As part of their DT project, the children used compasses to create accurate arcs and shapes for their bridge designs. This helped them plan symmetrical, well-balanced structures before building, and supported their understanding of how precise drawing is important in engineering.

Year 6: Carousels - December 2025

Year 6 have started designing their carousels as part of their Fairground topic in D&T. They had a merry time making them shine.

Nursery: Woodlark Nest - February 2026

This week Nursery have been reading the book 'Mrs Owl's Forest School, The Very Big Den' after reading the book and deciding that the problem of the mouse being too small to build a big den would apply to us. We decided to follow the solution of the mouse for this problem and build a nest on the ground for a woodlark. We can't wait to return to forest school for another adventure! 

Our nest must have been super cosy as we had a special visit from a woodlark. 

Year 1&2: 'The Billy Goats Gruff' Sliders, Levers and Wheels - February 2026

The children have been exploring ways to create movement using sliders, levers and wheels. In their final designs, they selected the mechanism they felt would best bring the characters from The Billy Goats Gruff to life.

Year 4: Bridge Building - December 2025

In DT, the children designed and built their own model bridges using a range of materials and joining techniques. Once completed, they tested their structures by sending a small car across to check the strength and stability. This hands-on project helped pupils apply their engineering ideas, problem-solve, and evaluate how well their bridges performed.

Year 2: Primary Engineers Project 'Clocks' - March 2026

The children in Year 2 had an amazing day taking part in a Primary Engineers Project, where they explored the fascinating world of horology (the study of time and clocks). They learned about the history of clocks and discovered how they work.

Working collaboratively in teams, the children built their very own “Time Machines.” They carefully followed step-by-step instructions to assemble their designs and then enjoyed customising them to make each one unique.

Once completed, the children tested their clocks to see if they worked, an exciting moment for everyone! It was a fun, engaging day that developed their teamwork, problem-solving, and engineering skills.

Year 4: Egg Carriers - April 2026

In Design and Technology, pupils put their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test by designing and making egg carriers. They explored how to build structures that would protect an egg from breaking, using a range of materials and testing different ideas. Through planning, creating and evaluating their designs, the children developed their understanding of engineering, resilience and teamwork while having great fun with this hands-on challenge.

Year 3: Pneumatic Monsters - May 2026

In D&T, Year 3 have been working hard to design and build their own monsters using pneumatics. The children explored how air pressure can be used to create movement and successfully made their monsters open and close their mouths. They showed fantastic creativity, perseverance, and enthusiasm during the project.

Year 3: Pneumatic Monsters - June 2026

We have finished making our pneumatic monster in Design and Technology. First, we designed our monster and carefully chose the materials we wanted to use. Then we built it and added a pneumatic system using a balloon. We had lots of fun blowing up the balloon to make the monster's mouth open and close. It was exciting to see how air pressure could create movement. We enjoyed being creative with our designs and working hard to solve any problems we came across. 

Cooking Club: Homemade Kebabs - June 2026

Our Cooking Club had a fantastic time making delicious homemade kebabs. The children practised important food preparation skills, learned about healthy ingredients and enjoyed creating their own tasty meals. It was wonderful to see their confidence and independence grow in the kitchen.

Cooking Club: Biscoff Cakes - July 2026

Cooking Club had a fantastic time making delicious Lotus Biscoff cakes! Students developed their baking skills, worked together as a team, and enjoyed decorating their creations with the irresistible flavour of Lotus Biscoff. A fun and rewarding session filled with creativity, confidence, and tasty results!

Year 4: Savoury Muffins - July 2026

Year 4 Class have had a wonderful half term in Design and Technology exploring, designing and making their own savoury muffins!

The children began by exploring a variety of savoury flavours and tasting different muffins to help them decide which ingredients worked well together. They then designed their own muffin recipes, carefully selecting their favourite toppings.

To bring their designs to life, the children made the savoury muffins they had planned, choosing from ingredients including cheese, sweetcorn, chilli, spinach, spring onion, garlic, mixed herbs and ground pepper. They thoroughly enjoyed baking their creations and, of course, tasting the delicious results! This project helped develop their food preparation skills, creativity and understanding of healthy, balanced ingredients.
