St Hilda's History Curriculum Statement

At St Hilda’s C of E Primary school, we follow the 2014 National Curriculum for History and Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage. We ensure that all children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Oldham’s past and that of Britain and the wider world which helps to stimulate their curiosity to know more about the past. Pupils learn to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. They begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. Our pupils begin with the History of their lives, they develop a sound understanding of chronology to enable them to see themselves as a part of history.

The development of our History curriculum, teaching and pedagogy at St Hilda’s is routed in the latest research and advice from professional associations. We have carefully created a curriculum that offers all of the above through a thorough and predominantly chronological approach (KS2). Each year children cover three History topics. They use artefact boxes to support learning and there are opportunities for trips and visitors to enhance their classroom based studies.
