The Year 6 children have been working hard to solve a curious case of a murder in the local supermarket. The inspectors knew that the murder was committed by a member of staff. The children had to use their skills in: place value, shape, reflection, translation and time, in order to solve the case and capture the murderer. This lesson was extremely useful and helped develop our problem solving skills. The murderer is female, works on the tills, has black hair, works full time and drives a red car. Nursery were very excited to see we had grown a pumpkin patch over the weekend. They chose their own pumpkins and compared the sizes of them using words such as “big” and “small”. They also said that some of the pumpkins were “really heavy”. The children used their tickets to enter the patch, chose a pumpkin and took it to the shopkeeper to pay.

In maths, our class explored how to calculate the area of different objects and spaces around the school. Using rulers and measuring tools, pupils worked in teams to measure, record, and compare areas, helping them understand how area is used in real-life situations.

In Year 6, pupils have been developing their understanding of shape and scale by enlarging shapes using scale factors. They began with simple shapes plotted on squared paper, carefully counting squares to identify side lengths and coordinates. Using a given scale factor, such as 2 or 3, they multiplied each length to create an accurate enlargement. Children learned that angles stay the same while side lengths change in proportion. They checked their work by comparing corresponding sides and discussing any errors. This practical approach helped pupils build accuracy, confidence, and a clear understanding of how scale factors affect shapes.

Sycamore and Willow classes have been taking part in an exciting TT Rockstars battle, putting their times tables skills to the test in a fun and friendly competition. Over the past week, pupils from both classes have been logging in, answering as many multiplication and division questions as they can, and earning points for their team. The battle has created a real buzz of enthusiasm, with children challenging themselves to improve their speed and accuracy while cheering on their classmates. It has been wonderful to see such determination, teamwork, and a growing confidence in times tables across both classes.
