Here at St Hilda’s C of E Primary School our world is enriched with a variety of children and families from many different cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs. A large proportion of our children follow an Islamic faith and are already very spiritual learners and reflectors for whom religion is held of high importance in their lives. Our aim is for our children to develop a deep knowledge of Christianity and other worldwide religions so that they are able to make links between their own religion and that of others. We seek to be ‘living our values’ in our day to day life showing respect, compassion and knowledge for other people’s faiths, religions, cultures and communities. Spiritual growth is at the heart of our teaching and we encourage children to ask and answer challenging and reflective questions in an environment in which they feel safe to do so. We strive to inspire children to be compassionate, free from prejudice, contribute to the inclusive ethos of the school and to become individuals with good judgment and high British and moral values. 

In Religious Education pupils are taught to discover, explore and consider different viewpoints to deeper questions through learning about and from religions and world views. They learn to apply what they have learnt and to make links to how this is meaningful in their lives today. Teaching should acquire children with the knowledge and understanding of a range of different religions and identities so that they can engage positively in their diverse society and aim to change and challenge injustice. Pupils should be able to engage with religious texts and sources and to be able to reflect on their own personal beliefs and values and learn to agree or disagree respectfully.

The teaching of Religious Educations is taken the Diocese RE Syllabus which has been written by RE Today and is underpinned by  ‘Understanding Christianity’. Through the teaching of RE we further promote and celebrate and our school and Christian values.
