Some very lucky children from years 4, 5 and 6 went to the Queen Elizabeth Hall in Oldham to see an event held by Professor Brian Cox. He is a very famous scientist from Oldham  (particle physicist) who is very inspirational , especially to the next generation of young people. He talked about Earth and space and many fascinating facts! It was a really enlightening evening!

Recently, children in Reception have been learning all about Winter. To build on that knowledge, we have been looking at how some animals are adapted to live in colder climates, in particular the polar bear.

The children became very interested and engaged during our learning and discussions when talking about ‘freezing and melting’ and they wanted to learn more and “do more experiments”……so we had a Science Week!

We set up a Science Lab in our role play area and set up science concepts for the children to explore e.g. magnetic/non-magnetic, floating and sinking, how has it changed? Etc.

The children also loved exploring the globe and what they could see through the microscope! They impressed us so much with their questions and responses to the challenges and we saw many budding Scientists in the making!

The children have enjoyed exploring plants in Science. We really liked watching the plant grow overtime.

Foxes really enjoyed the Spectacular Science Show! The children got to see what Forces do. They can tel you all about the amazing fun things the push and pull force can do and even make a few experiments at home!

Birch class are investigating complete and incomplete circuits in their science lesson.

This half-term, the Nursery children have been learning about minibeasts. Each week they have investigated a different minibeast. 

Cherry class carried out an experiment to identify and sort materials into electrical conductors and insulators. It was an enLIGHTening lesson!

Maple class has been investigating the properties of rocks. We examined lots of different types of rocks and carried out an investigation into their permeability and buoyancy.

In Science we have been learning about plants. We went on a walk to explore trees as plants.

Oak class and Pine class had a friendly contest to see which class could produce the best parachute (without the help of their teachers!) They discussed, planned and produced their parachute, they then tested the air resistance of their end product with the help of stuffed toy. What an extraordin-airy experiment!

The children have been learning about Jack and the Beanstalk. Each child has had the opportunity to plant a bean seed.  Over the next few weeks, they will make sure their seed has enough sunshine and water to help it grow and draw a diary of the progress of their plant. 

Badgers Class had an amazing time at Cockfields Farm consolidating all of our learning about animals in Science. We really enjoyed meeting lots of different animals, exploring life on the farm and the bumpy tractor ride! Head over to our Facebook page to see more pictures from our trip! 

Looking at different materials around school and how they are used.

What an amazing day we have had at the Castleshaw adventure centre. We went on a hike to look for signs of badgers and other wildlife, made reed boats and floated them along the stream, dipped the pond for tadpoles and more. Everyone was really interested in learning about the habitats of the wildlife in the countryside. The children also learnt about the parts of an insects, and everyone helped Mr Presland to dress up as a bug! The children behaved exceptionally, they all showed excellent listening skills and beautiful manners. Well done Hedgehogs, Mrs Leach is super proud of you all!

The children in Reception have made a brilliant start to their 'Autumn' topic. We went to Forest Schools for Fantastic Friday and explored the area. We then collected some of the colourful leaves that have started falling from the trees. 

In science we have been earning about living things and their habitats. We have been categorising animals into vertebrates and invertebrates and looking at classification keys. Here we have categorised animals into 5 different types. 

Robins are learning about plants, growing and seasons. They have enjoyed reading 'Titch' and 'How I grow'. The children have drawn flowers and sequenced the steps needed to plant a seed. They even had a go at planting poppy seeds and acting out how a plant grows.

The children in Reception had a wonderful experience when the farm came to school. Everyone got to meet Alma the sheepdog, Bluebell the donkey, the lambs, a calf, goats and kids, the pig, chickens and rabbits. The children had a turn at brushing the Shetland Pony, too. The rain didn't stop the fun, and everyone created special memories. We hope they have shared them with you!

To celebrate Earth Day, our pupils took part in a range of exciting activities to learn about caring for our planet. They explored ways to reduce waste, recycle and protect the environment while discussing how small actions can make a big difference. It was a fantastic opportunity to inspire our children to become responsible and environmentally aware citizens.
